On repeated viewing this film loses none of it's brilliance, in actual fact it delivers further joy each time. The film didn't receive the acclaim it deserved which says more for the quality of critics than it does for the quality of the film. The vastly overrated There Will Be Blood received nominations in the best picture category ahead of it.
It would be very difficult to find fault with any facet of this movie. Visually it is one of the most stunning pictures ever committed to the screen. The cinematography of Roger Deakins is all too often breathtaking, lending itself expertly to the tone and time of the movie. The Direction of Andrew Dominik is sparing and unfussy, leaving the actors to excel with his brilliant script adapted from a novel by Ron Hansen.
The acting is strong across the board featuring a career defining role from Casey Affleck as the assassin Robert Ford. Pitt is menacing in the role of Jesse James. There are also brilliant supporting turns from Sam Rockwell and Sam Shepherd in particular. Special word for Nick Cave who composed a quite brilliant score also.
This is a film that no movie fan would want to miss.
